Ironman Switzerland Training Plan Totals

June 23, 2009

I started my blog in early ’07 so that my family and friends could track my progress as I trained for IM Austria.  I was diligent about reporting about my training log, but haven’t been so much this time.  (I guess I’ve enjoyed writing about other things…).  I’ve looked back at my training miles from last time around, and here’s a little comparison between the two years:

IMA Totals:

Swim: 62,800 meters (39 miles)

Bike:  2117 miles

Run: 416 miles

IMS Totals:

Swim: 64,000 meters (40 miles)

Bike: 1718 miles

Run: 304 miles

Hmm, there seems to be a slight discrepancy between the number of miles I logged in ’07  and the number of miles I’ve gone over the last few months.  After a little research, what I found was that I started training for IMA on January 21st, and I officially started training for IMS in mid-February after Rocky Raccoon.

But that also means that I was doing a lot of runnin’ up until that point (around 392 miles between mid-November and mid-February, including Rocky’s 50-miles).

I also realized that I miscalculated my training plan for IMS, and got behind a week…

But the biggest difference is that even though the mileage is less, I feel stronger, faster and more efficient…because I feel like I’ve trained more appropriately this time.  The majority of our rides have been in the hills of San Ann, Clermont or Central Florida.

OK, those aren’t the Swiss Alps I know, but compared to nearly all of our long rides for IMA being at flat Suncoast or Withlachoochie Trail, something has to be better than nothing!

I’ve been happier and more positive about and during training.  I’ve had lots more fun training with groups of people, instead of logging hours upon hours alone.  And I haven’t felt completely dog tired until these last two weeks or so.

Maybe there is a difference between Quality and Quantity.  Only time will tell…

Race Phase Completed!

July 2, 2007

The final training period is complete…the Race Phase!  Here are the totals, excluding the minimal stuff I’ll do in Klagenfurt when we arrive:

Swim: 31,600 meters or 19.6 miles (8 hours)

Bike: 600 miles (38 hours)

Run: 128 miles (21 hours)

Weights: 1.5 hours

Ironman Specific Base Completed!

May 30, 2007

Another six weeks has passed, another phase of training under my belt.  It breaks down like this:

Swim: 30,400 meters or 18 miles (12 hours)

Bike: 622 miles (36 hours)

Run: 112 miles (18 hours)

Weights: 3.5 hours

Whew!  That’s some serious mileage, eh?  So now what, you ask?  We’re on to the RACE PHASE!  Yahoo!  Time is ticking now…less than 6 weeks til the big day.  This phase will include my longest run of 3 hours and a 7-hour bike ride.  After that, mileage will dramatically drop off, and the official taper will begin in three weeks.  I can’t believe we’re at this point already.  I’m excited and nervous and anxious and thrilled. I still have some work to do, but I’m feeling confident with all this money in the bank :)

Aerobic Base Completed!

April 15, 2007

The second phase is now complete, and here are the totals for the half-way point:

Swim: 18,200 meters (7 hours)

Bike: 400 miles (24 hours)

Run: 77 miles (13 hours)

Weights: 5.5 hours

Total (approximate) hours = 49.5

Except for swimming, the totals are less that those in the previous phase, mainly because I took off some time and decreased some mileage due to my back.  Next phase: Ironman Specific Base.  The longest ride in this phase will be a 390-minute ride and a long run of 150 minutes (this includes the MS 150 next weekend and the Florida 70.3 in May).  These next 6-weeks will be the longest sessions of the training plan, to be followed by the final “Race Phase.”  Hold on people…its uphill for the next 6-weeks!

Adaptation Phase completed!

March 5, 2007

After our 50, sorry, 51 mile bike ride the Adaptation (6 week) Phase is completed.   Here are the totals and approximate hours spent:

Swim: 9600 meters (4 hours)

Bike: 495 miles (28 hours)

Run: 99 miles (16 hours)

Weights: 5 hours

Next up, the Aerobic Phase, which will include boosting the swim up to 90 minutes, the longest bike to 300 minutes (that’s 5 hours folks!) and the long run up to 120 minutes.  Sounds like fun…bring it on!!!
